So every time I lead worship, I use a little “cheat sheet” on stage. Most of the time it goes unnoticed, but sometimes people see it. And when they do, they ask “What is that piece of paper?” Well, it looks a little something like this:

With most places that I lead worship, the band is different every time and we usually practice a few hours before the service starts. This sheet is my cheat sheet to help me lead the band and be certain about the arrangement that we are playing the song in. The big number before the song title is what fret I capo that song at. But if the song was in D, it would just say D. The smaller letters in red make up the mapping of the song. If I know exactly where the song is going during a rehearsal, I’m able to better lead. I will also make small notes to help me lead different areas of the song. A star symbol represents a unique part of the song is coming up. A down arrow represents a soft part in the song and an up arrow represents a loud part in the song.

If you are a worship leader and think something like this could help you lead a group, make it your own. This is what works for me, but I encourage you to find something that works for you.

So it’s been quite some time since I’ve done the speaking part at any type of event. Normally I’m the worship leader and I may speak in between songs or pray before the speaker or pastor comes up, but it’s been over 3 years since I’ve been the one who speaks. Well this morning I led worship for Cartersville High School’s first FCA meeting AND spoke. Scary…I know. And here’s how it went down:

// Setlist //
Happy Day (Tim Hughes)
Your Grace is Enough (Chris Tomlin)
Mighty to Save (Hillsong)

// Message //
Well, I only had a few minutes to share so I will share it with you and try to be brief. I told a story about the New Orleans area when Hurricane Katrina devasted most of the city. A volunteer was driving around the city and helping everywhere he could. As he turned his Jeep around a corner, he saw a little boy with his nose pressed up against a window. Curious, the man drove that way to investigate. He found the little boy nearly drooling over some donuts. As he looked at the boy’s clothes and how dirty he was, he realized this boy was most likely homeless and maybe even orphaned. So the man got out of his Jeep and walked up to the little boy and asked, “Would you like some of those donuts?” “Oh, yes sir!” the little boy replied excitely. The man went inside and bought him a dozen donuts. He came back outside and with a big smile, handed the boy the bag of donuts. As the man was walking away the little boy asked, “Mister, are you Jesus?”

When was the last time someone mistook you for being like Jesus?

For students, it’s a brand new school year. You’re going to meet new friends, new teachers, and you’ll have new classes. And most of the people in the school are going to focus on being the best football player, the best cheerleader, the most popular, have the hottest boyfriend or the hottest girlfriend, have the most friends, or go to the coolest parties. But what would our schools look like if the students decided that instead they were going to be like Jesus this year. What would your school look like? For adults, for others, what would your job look like? What would your family look like? What would YOU look like…if you decided that each and every day you were going to strive to look like Jesus?

In Ephesians 5 it says, “Be imitators of God, therefore, as dearly loved children and live a life of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God. But among you there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality, or of any kind of impurity, or of greed, because these are improper for God’s holy people. Nor should there be obscenity, foolish talk, or coarse joking, which are out of place, but rather thankgiving…For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light (for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness, and truth)…Be very careful, then, how you live – not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is…Sing and make music in your heart to the Lord, always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.”

Heavenly Father, I ask you right now to teach us how to be imitators of you. Lord I pray that as the students return to their schools, and as others in their jobs, I pray that people will mistake us for being like Jesus. And when we are around others, let our love overflow and be so evident, that people will know we’ve been with you. Teach us, Father, to be imitators of you and to show this dying world the truest love they can ever experience, Your love. In Your name I pray, amen.

Friends I ran into:
-Chase Gentez

Funny Things I learned:
-Andy is a pioneer. I am an astronaut.
-”What are senior adults going to do if they get mad at you? Email you? NO!!!” Perry Noble

———-

Lab One: The New Thing (Dave Ferguson) (The New Thing)
*a new church will grow 23 times faster than a church that is 10 or more years old
*a new church has 3-4 times more conversions

4 Church Planting Lessons

The Vision Lesson
- the “God-thing” comes before the vision
-God is at work right NOW

The Strategy Lesson
-make your strategy fit on a napkin
-keep it simple
-if it’s simple, it’s reproducible
-ask yourself what your dream is

The Finance Lesson
-money always follows vision
-God is always at work
-vision is free

The Reproducing Lesson
-take risks on emerging leaders

The Future is NOW!

———-

Lab 2: A Relook At Calling (Perry Noble)

*Zaxby’s without chicken is like a church without vision
*Isaiah 49

Questions We Should Ask Ourselves

How much time do I spend listening to God?
-in order to be a good leader, we must be excellent followers of God
-listen AND hear
-we don’t issue marching orders…we receive them
-God will show us HOW to do things. all we have to do is follow Him
-in Exodus thru Deuteronomy, these words ring over and over: “God SAID to Moses” (God told Moses was to do, moses was clueless, but he did it)
-in Acts, these words ring over and over: “The Spirit SAID” “The Spirit MOVED” (the apostles were clueless, but they did what God told them to do and the Spirit moved)
*we cannot expect the Spirit to lead publicly if we are not yielded privately

Am I more concerned about being discovered or being developed?
-we can’t enjoy our OWN blessings because we are too busy watching other people’s blessings

Am I believing any lies?

Am I taking risks or playing it safe?
-when you take risks, your pride is on the line and you are open for embarassment
-too many of us give up when we fail
-the greatest leaders fail and then keep taking more risks
-in order to accomplish God sized visions it takes God sized risks
-we need to dream BIGGER

*there is a difference between a risk and a stupid idea
*****DO A WORK IN ME BEFORE YOU DO A WORK THRU ME*****

———-

Lab 3: Sacred Echo (Margaret Feinburg)

*What is a sacred echo?
-God’s persistent voice in your life

*Matthew 25

If you don’t wear your crown, I’ll give it to someone else.

The crowns God asks us to wear:
-surrender
-sacrifice
-service

During the process of Anthem I realized and learned lots of things. One being, recording is EXPENSIVE!!! Well, I say that to say….I’m beginning the process of a new project. Anthem was only a 5 song EP and had 3 covers on it. I want to do a 10-12 song full length cd and really push it. I’m hoping to be approved by iTunes one day (I applied 6 months ago). I will also be pressing this cd and will have actually cd’s instead of it only being digital. But like I said, recording is EXPENSIVE…and I have no money to record this project with.

So first, I want you to understand the purpose in this new project and know my heart in it. I’ve begun writing some new songs already and I feel like God is placing some things on my heart that I want to share with the world. I have no desire or goal to take this to labels to shop and for me to get signed. If that’s where God takes it, then I know it will be part of His plan. My purpose, goal, and passion right now is to get these songs down on a cd and get the tunes out to as many people as possible in hopes that God will reach millions and the name of Christ will become famous in every stretch of the earth. To do this, I need help.

Many ways you can help…

pray that God will be shown in this project and His name will be famous in all the earth

BUY ANTHEM!!! all of the proceeds from Anthem will go toward recording the new project

buy as many copies of “Anthem” as you can and give them out as gifts – they’re only $5

help me out in the writing process whether thru music or words

donate toward or donate all of the studio time costs

donate toward or donate all of the mixing time costs

donate toward or donate all of the mastering costs

donate toward or donate all of the cd pressing costs

donate toward or donate all of the tshirt printing costs

help coordinate the cd release

help design of the cd cover

help design some new tshirts

help with promotions

Viva la Vida (Coldplay)
I’ve been listening to this cd for like a month or two straight. I can’t get enough. The guitar work and the structures of the songs are just genius. I freaking love it.

The Bright Sadness (Charlie Hall)
This is by FAR the most unique worship album out right now. I really like Charlie Hall. His range isn’t huge but his lyrics sure are. What a great guy and worship leader. I just got this last night, but it’s rocking me. I LOVE Chainbreaker, Walk the World, and Mystery. (Thanks Matt)

Hello Love (Chris Tomlin)
What can I say? Chris Tomlin is an amazing worship leader. He’s got such HUGE range and a huge heart. I have to be honest in saying that he is kind of a “safe” songwriter. He doesn’t branch out a whole lot. He does slightly, but not extremely. Sing, Sing, Sing is a great song, but I actually think I like the Passion version better. God of this City is just such an amazing anthem. But, I would have to say You Lifted Me Out is my favorite song because it is actually unique. But like I said before…what can I say about Chris Tomlin? Most of these songs will be played in churches all across the world. What a way to reach people with the words God is laying on your heart.

Remedy Club Tour (David Crowder)
Just got this last night too and it’s got a great feel. I’ve never got the opportunity to see Crowder live, but I have a good feeling of what it would be like. Hopefully I will be able to have that opportunity to soon. I can’t wait to play Can You Feel It?

Anthem (Kyle O’Neal)
Shameless promotion but PLEASE go out and get the EP on 9.2108. It’s kinda limited where I’m selling it, but I hope to have it on iTunes soon. Go here to learn about how I’m selling it.
